Ahmedabad: Bulldozer action overnight at Chandola lake, hundreds of illegal houses razed - police basis and statement

Ahmedabad: The biggest bulldozer operation ever was carried out in Chandola lake area in Ahmedabad, Gujarat on Tuesday. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and Gujarat Police jointly demolished hundreds of illegal constructions in the presence of 50 to 80 bulldozers and 2000 policemen. This action was against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, who have been claimed by the police to be involved in fake documents and terrorist activities. This operation was named 'Bulldozer Strike' and 'Operation Clean' on 'Mini Bangladesh'. But what is the basis of this action, and what is the police saying? Let's know with the facts.

Basis of action

The operation began after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, in which 26 people were killed. Based on intelligence and technical surveillance, Gujarat Police identified the Chandola lake area as a stronghold of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. On April 26, 1,024 people were detained in Ahmedabad and Surat, of which 890 were from Ahmedabad and 134 from Surat. According to the police, many of them had fake Aadhaar cards, voter IDs and PAN cards.

The police claim that illegal huts, farmhouses, warehouses and parking areas were built by dumping soil on government land around Chandola lake. The investigation revealed four Bangladeshis having links with Al Qaeda, which further intensified the action. Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi said, "Strict action will be taken against illegal immigrants and their helpers."

Connection of Mahmood Pathan alias Lallu Bihari

The police also razed the illegal farmhouse of Mahmood Pathan alias Lallu Bihari in this operation. According to the police, Lallu Bihari was the mastermind behind sheltering illegal Bangladeshis and providing them with fake documents. He had illegally occupied Chandola lake by dumping mud and built an empire.

Details of the bulldozer action

In the operation that began on Tuesday morning:

  • 50-80 bulldozers and 36-200 dumpers were deployed.
  • Encroachment of 18,000 sq ft (2000 sq yard) area was cleared.
  • 2000 policemen, teams from Crime Branch, SOG, Cyber Crime and SRP were present.
  • The AMC deployed 1800 employees, and made arrangements for immediate removal of the debris.

“The action was carried out with 74 JCBs, 200 trucks and extensive preparations,” said Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik. The police carried out the operation by cutting off power connections and keeping a vigil throughout the night.

Police statement

Ahmedabad Crime Branch Joint Commissioner Sharad Singhal said, "This action was taken on the instructions of the Home Minister, Police Commissioner and DGP. Chandola lake area had become a hub of criminal activities." DCP Ajit Rajian confirmed that more than 450 people were detained, and the deportation process will begin.

Police officer Sharad Singhal told ANI, "Investigation revealed that huts were built by dumping mud on the government land of the pond. Precautions were taken to prevent loss of life."

Controversy and social media

The action received mixed reactions on X. Some users called it necessary for national security, while others called it a move to increase community tension. One user wrote, "Shout, panic, or jump into the court - the bulldozer will not stop!" At the same time, some questioned that action on social events and houses without a thorough investigation is not appropriate.

Legal and social impact

During the hearing in the High Court, the government claimed that the four Bangladeshis' links with Al Qaeda were a threat to national security. However, the action has created an atmosphere of fear among the local people. Experts say that illegal migration is a serious issue, but sensitivity is necessary to maintain community harmony.

Conclusion

The bulldozer action in Ahmedabad's Chandola lake area reflects the Gujarat government's tough policy against illegal migration and terrorist activities. The police claim that the action was necessary for national security, but the overnight raids on social events and settlements have raised many questions. The full picture of this case will emerge after the investigation and deportation process. Time will tell whether this action will ensure security or increase community tension.
