The horror of the attacks
Israel targeted crowded areas, schools and refugee camps in Gaza. 13 people were killed in an attack on a tent camp in Al-Mawasi in southern Gaza, while 16 refugees died in the Mustafa Hafiz School. 12 people were killed in an attack near the Palestine Stadium in Gaza City. According to Al Jazeera, 48 people died while waiting for relief supplies. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, more than 56,000 Palestinians have been killed so far in the war that began on 7 October 2023, more than half of them women and children.
Obstacles in the way of ceasefire
A 60-day ceasefire was proposed under the mediation of the US and Qatar, which was accepted by Israel. Trump appealed to Hamas to accept it as a 'final offer'. However, Hamas laid down the condition that Israel must completely withdraw from Gaza and end the ban on humanitarian aid. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made it clear that a ceasefire is not possible until Hamas is eliminated.
Humanitarian crisis and international response
Hunger and humanitarian crisis are deepening in Gaza. According to the United Nations, there are obstacles in the delivery of aid, and the looting of trucks by armed gangs has worsened the situation. UN human rights chief Volker Turk called it a "horrific and unbearable suffering". Many countries have condemned Israel's actions, but the lack of concrete steps is raising questions.
What next?
Prospects for peace in Gaza are fading. Tensions are at their peak amid Hamas's hostage release and Israeli military action. Experts believe that peace is impossible without a permanent ceasefire and a solid commitment from both sides. Gazans are looking for a ray of hope amid the rubble and mourning, but the question remains the same—how will the agreement be reached?
